![]() Of the two options you suggested, I also suspect they’d go for the fall of Arnor, mainly because 1. I concur with others, in that I am assuming they’ll try some ill-conceived spinoff with LotR characters and will be pleasantly surprised if they choose otherwise. I honestly thought they were actually pretty bad as adaptations a lot of the time). (I rewatched the trilogy back in like December for the first time in several years. I’m also baffled that PJ’s involvement makes people say it will be more faithful to the source than, say, ROP was. ![]() Then I sardonically think, “Will they try to tell me going to the big, strong war fortress is foolish again?”Īctually, I’m a bit baffled that anyone wants more of Jackson after The Hobbit films. I find my curiosity for the Helm Hammerhand anime gets a bit muted when I realise not only is likely it going to be Jackson’s Rohan (which doesn’t look much like Rohan as Tolkien described) but also some of Jackson’s team – including Boyens – are advising. I’d hoped ROP might’ve gone in a different direction, but it often went back to that well a fair few times. I could honestly do less Jackson-flavoured works as well. On the other hand, I also recall Netflix suggesting ‘spin-offs’ about Gandalf or Gimli to the Tolkien Estate so who knows what villainy Hollywood producers might conjure up. And I can only hope the New Zealand Government does not feel inclined to bribe Warners into filming here either – if Warners does opt for New Zealand, great, but let it be without any more giant taxpayer subsidies.Īngmar Wars were my first thought as well. Let there be a new vision of Tolkien’s world. Milking an intellectual property is one thing, but milking an individual director? Just no. I understand that many in the fanbase idolise his original trilogy, but honestly… it is time Middle-earth moved on from him. My only sour-feeling about this is that I am extremely wary of Jackson’s involvement. (Meanwhile, while the Kinstrife would have more recognisable locations, the Angmar story would have Amon Sûl becoming Weathertop). Maybe they could even use Glorfindel, a character everyone bar the 1971 Swedish adaptation leaves out, but who is most certainly present in the Angmar storyline. Nice and simple.īetter yet, you’ve got the Witch-King ready-made as a link of villainy, and you can bring in the likes of Elrond or Gandalf as side-characters – presumably with different actors this time. These are, after all, Isildur’s descendants and Aragorn’s ancestors. But the Angmar story? You can tell that, without having to ret-con Jackson at all. Doing the Kin-strife would force a ret-con on the Jacksonverse, since by definition, its subject-matter is all about descent from Anarion. Recall that Jackson basically writes out Anarion and his House. And more specifically, since this is Warners, and thus continuity with Jackson’s Ring’s trilogy looms large… I would suggest Angmar is the front-runner. Both of them are safely out of reach of The Rings of Power. There are others, such as the founding of Rohan, or the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, but these two strike me as the most cinematic. Angmar and the Destruction of Arnor/Arthedain.The most likely candidates for movie-worthy material would thus be: Warners is already doing an animated adaptation of the Helm Hammerhand story, of course. That leaves The Lord of the Rings Appendices, specifically the Third Age material. One would assume they would not do anything Second Age, since Amazon’s The Rings of Power is currently occupying that niche.Based off other comments, this does not appear to be retreading The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.Ergo, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales material is off the table. There is no deal with the Tolkien Estate. Now, I think we can eliminate certain possibilities: Warner Brothers has done a deal to make some more Middle-earth films: Only this time it’s a milking that the fanbase has reason to be curious about. No sooner do I suggest that the Roald Dahl Nonsense is a reflection of modern corporates, and their obsession with milking old intellectual properties, than we get another excellent example of the phenomenon.
